Termites. You might have seen the damage they can do to wood, and you surely would hate to have them do the same to your home, but how do you keep them away? There are a few things to take into consideration to prevent your home from being inviting to termites. First, termites will be looking for 3 things where they might make a home. Food, moisture and shelter. While it might be difficult to prevent them from finding one of those, you should be able to prevent them from having access to all 3 in your home. If there is wood right up against your house, whether it is old barrels, pallets or firewood, this can make entry into your home very easy. The same goes for wooden siding that ends close to the ground.

Sometimes you won’t notice a termite infestation until it is too late, but keeping an eye out for sawdust in odd places or swarming queens, might give you a clue that something is up.

If you are an allergy sufferer, you might be careful to minimize your exposure to pets. You might have friends who you don’t visit because of this. Imagine, though, that you buy a new home, and then realize that the previous owner had pets. Unfortunately, there are many places in a home where the dander from pets might be trapped, causing you to be affected for a long time.

The only solution to the problem is to have the house cleaned thoroughly, and in the proper way. If there is carpet in the house, it needs to be vacuumed with a vacuum that is equipped with a HEPA filter. These filters prevent the dander from becoming airborne and spreading to other areas of your home.

If you have a forced air HVAC system, there could also be dander trapped inside of the ductwork, as well as, in filters. Replacing the filters might help, but it could be necessary to have a professional duct cleaning to make sure that it is as clean as possible.

Watch Out For Bed Bugs https://king-inspections.com/watch-out-for-bed-bugs/ Fri, 30 Nov 2018 12:29:09 +0000 https://king-inspections.com/?p=1071 The post Watch Out For Bed Bugs appeared first on Columbus Ohio Home Inspections.

Maybe your parents used to tell you before going to bed: “Sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite”

However, this line might not be so amusing if you are experiencing a bed bug infestation. Bed bugs were thought to have been eradicated about 70 years ago, but the poison used to kill them, DDT, was banned due to its serious health effects. After that time, bed bugs have been making a comeback, and they are notoriously hard to get rid of.

When travelling it is wise to take precautions so as to not bring home bed bugs. Whenever you stay in a hotel, your first thing to do should be to check for bed bugs. You can check in the thick seams around the mattress. If you take off the sheets and pull at the seam, you can get a clearer view. If there is a couch or sofa in the hotel room, you should check that as well. Don’t put down your luggage on the bed or couch before checking them, or you could pick some guests up for your trip home.

Window Moisture https://king-inspections.com/window-moisture/ Tue, 27 Nov 2018 03:25:52 +0000 https://king-inspections.com/?p=1068 The post Window Moisture appeared first on Columbus Ohio Home Inspections.

In between the panes of your double pane windows, there is a gas. This works as an insulator so that the cold outside won’t affect the temperature inside. To keep the gas inside and to block out moisture, the windows are sealed with a silica desiccant. This seal can fail over time, or it could get damaged.

This is due to movement of your windows when the gas inside is heated up and cooled down so that it expands and contracts.

When this seal fails, you will see condensation build up inside of your windows. This will cause your windows to appear foggy or misty. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this problem. Most likely, you will need to replace your windows since there is no way to repair the window in a way that will restore it to its original performance. Until the problem is fixed, your windows will no longer work as a good insulator.

Drinking Water https://king-inspections.com/drinking-water/ Wed, 31 Oct 2018 04:25:57 +0000 https://king-inspections.com/?p=1065 The post Drinking Water appeared first on Columbus Ohio Home Inspections.

When you fill up a glass of water from your tap, does it have a strange smell to it? This is the case for many, and it is not necessarily something that is harmful, but there are certain smells that might be a cause for concern. Here are some common smells that you might experience and what they most likely imply:

A smell of Chlorine or Bleach most likely means that your water is over-chlorinated. To remedy this, install an activated coal filter. Since exposure to high levels of chlorine over a long period of time is harmful, it is a worthwhile investment.

If your water smells like detergent, it is possible that water is seeping from your septic system into your water supply. This is very serious, since the septic water will carry many disease causing bacteria and harmful chemicals. You should avoid drinking your water until a professional can take a look at your septic system.

A smell of rotten eggs likely means that your water has a high iron content and low PH. Even though this is not very harmful to you, it is a hard issue to resolve, and will require professional help.

Living in a home with more than one floor, you want to pay attention to the condition of your stairways to keep your family safe. Even though walking up and down a stair might seem like a mundane thing, falls in stairs can be potentially fatal. Young children, as well as, elderly parents are especially at risk.

What do you want to look for to check that your stairs are safe? Any carpet that is installed in stairs needs to be firmly attached. If it isn’t, you should either remove it completely or make sure that it gets fastened properly.

The steps should be equally spaced apart with a consistent depth. If this is not the case, it is much easier to trip.

There should always be a handrail installed next to your stairs. The handrail should be firmly attached, able to support the full weight of a person holding on to it for support, and be free from cracks or splinters, since these could cause a person to jerk back and lose their balance.

Are Your Ducts Leaking? https://king-inspections.com/are-your-ducts-leaking/ Sun, 30 Sep 2018 17:46:58 +0000 https://king-inspections.com/?p=1057 The post Are Your Ducts Leaking? appeared first on Columbus Ohio Home Inspections.

Just like your body has a circulatory system that runs through it, if you have a central heating and cooling system, so does your home. Inside the walls and ceilings runs duct-work that is transporting hot or cold air to keep the temperature comfortable. To make sure that your system is cost effective, you want to make sure that your ducts are in good repair.

A common problems is leaks. You are more likely to experience leaks where the pressure is highest, and this means closest to the unit, but then again, leaks could appear anywhere. The problem is that a leak will not only leak out the air from the ducts, it could also take in air from unused portions of your home, bringing with it smells, dust, and also affecting the temperature of the air in the ducts. Many times the leaks will appear in the seams of the duct-work, since these areas are a weak spot.

Is There Mold In Your Bathroom? https://king-inspections.com/mold/ Fri, 28 Sep 2018 22:19:51 +0000 https://king-inspections.com/?p=1054 The post Is There Mold In Your Bathroom? appeared first on Columbus Ohio Home Inspections.

At some point in your life, you have probably stepped in to a bathroom and recognized the smell of mold. Maybe it is in your bathroom? Mold is one of the most common problems that you as a homeowner will be faced with, and out of all places in your home, the bathroom is the most likely place for the problem to pop up. This is because you have a lot of moisture in a small, enclosed area. There are many reasons why a problem might arise. It could be a small leak from a pipe or a drain. These can be difficult to find, especially if they are located inside of one of your walls.

It could also be due to improper ventilation. When you take a hot shower, all that moisture laden air needs to be ventilated outside as soon as possible. This is not possible without a fan that is properly installed with ductwork leading to the outside.

Since mold remediation can be both costly and time consuming, don’t just ignore that smell in your bathroom. Instead, take the time to do research on what might be causing it, and resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Cool Roofing https://king-inspections.com/cool-roofing/ Thu, 30 Aug 2018 21:19:10 +0000 https://king-inspections.com/?p=1026 The post Cool Roofing appeared first on Columbus Ohio Home Inspections.

Your roof is the largest area of your home that is exposed to sunlight. Depending on the material it is made from, it could make a huge impact on how your home is heated up in the summer.

The best material to use for keeping your home from heating up is something called cool roofing.

These are materials that are especially designed to reflect the heat from the sun away from your home.

It is possible to apply a membrane to your existing roof that will do the job, or you could buy the cool roofing material directly and either replace your existing roof or include it in a new build.

While being a more expensive material, it does usually last longer than other materials since it doesn’t expand and contract from the changing temperatures, something known as thermal cycling.

Some utility companies will even offer an incentive for you to install a cool roof, and this could offset the added cost that a cool roof installation incurs.

Buying a home could very well be the largest investment you will make in your life. Knowing this should motivate you to have a regular maintenance schedule and follow it closely. Why? As with most things in life, the longer a problem is left without attention, the more serious it will become. For maintenance, that could mean that ignoring a problem today, could cost greatly in repair cost, or even worse, it could become a serious issue to the health or safety of you and your family.

To create an easy to follow maintenance schedule that fits your home, you can do a search for “home maintenance schedule” on the internet. That will give you some suggestions that you could use as a foundation for your own, personalized schedule. You will find that many of the major things to check on, such as your water heater, air conditioning and similar items have a set lifespan, but also specific parts that need to be inspected or replaced at regular intervals.

If you make sure that all your maintenance needs are on the schedule, spread out evenly over the year, you should be able to just spend a few minutes every week to make sure that your home is in the best shape possible.
