As winter is approaching, most homeowners are concerned about how high their heating bills will be for the winter. While there are many different things that you can do to save money on your heating bill, there is one change that you can make that will affect your energy bill year round, and that is to add insulation to your water pipes. Why is this important? Well, over the distance from your water heater to your faucet, you might lose 20% of the heat of the hot water. This is something that will happen year round and preventing it can save you quite a bit of money.

So how do stop the heat loss? You need to install insulation around your pipes. Pipe insulation can be bought in tube form, and all you will need to do is cut it to length. Whenever there is a bend, you should cut the ends at 45 degrees to get the best coverage possible, and then tape the insulation closed to further add to its efficiency.

We spend a lot of time in our bathrooms, so you should make sure that your bathroom is in good repair. With all the steam and moisture that is common in bathrooms, there is a high possibility of mold starting to grow there. Mold can grow and spread very quickly, so you should do all you can to keep it from getting a foothold.

Whenever you have water that spills on the floor, you should dry it up right away instead of just letting it sit there. You also shouldn’t leave wet towels sitting on the floor in a pile. In fact, if your towels don’t dry quickly enough inside your bathroom, you might want to take them out of there and hang them either outside or run them through a dryer.

Your ceiling fan plays an important role in funneling out moist air from your bathroom to the outside, so it needs to work properly. If you find that your ceiling fan isn’t clearing out the steam from your bathroom quickly enough, it might be time to replace it.

What is the best time for an infrared scan? Unlike regular photography that relies on light for good pictures, infrared cameras can actually get a more accurate reading right after sundown. Why is that?

Infrared scans detect differences in temperature. If you want to find something that stands out, such as moisture, you want to scan for it at a time when it is more likely to have a different temperature than its surroundings. A wet material that has been exposed to the sun all day will cool at a different rate than the same material would when dry, so because of this, the moist spots will stand out clearly when you point an infrared camera at it. Due to this, the time right after sunset is an ideal time to scan your home.

Fortunately, this is also a convenient time for many homeowners, since they will be out of work and be able to be home and get to meet the individual doing the scan in person.

If you have a septic system, do you know how to care for it? You might not think much about your septic system when everything works properly, but if it were to have problems, it could seriously disrupt your life for a long period of time, costing a lot of money to fix.

While septic systems are fairly durable, there are some things that you should avoid to make sure that you don’t inadvertently damage the system, requiring repair.

First, you need to know where the system is located. This is very important, because you never want to drive over or park on top of the location where your septic system is located. This could do serious damage to it.

Second, you shouldn’t flush any chemicals down the drain that could kill the beneficial bacteria located in the tank, since this would hinder its ability to break down the sewage properly.

You should have your system inspected every three years to make sure that it operates properly.

There are many things that can cause your plumbing to back up, leading to problems throughout your home, and sometimes it might be tricky to find out exactly what the cause is. Often, homeowners will look for the cause inside the home, but the trouble could actually have a cause in your front yard. If you have trees or bushes growing near your sewer pipes, it is possible that they could send roots into the pipes and block them up. While pipes usually are sealed up tightly, shifts in the ground due to season changes or roots growing nearby could cause a slight leak from a pipe.

The mixture that runs through those pipes is ideal nutrition for the trees, and will cause the tree or bush to grow quicker, sending more roots down the pipe. The end result will be a pipe packed full of roots.

Unfortunately, the only solution to this problem would be to clean it out mechanically and seal it back up. While there are some temporary solutions to this problem, the trees will always keep growing back.

Pesticides – as much as we would like to live our life without needing to use them, if you are a homeowner, you’re very likely to use pesticides. They might be needed to keep pests away, whether rodents or bugs or anything else; they are also used to prevent growth of weeds in your yard.

Some might believe that since pesticides aren’t as harmful to humans as they used to be, no special care needs to be exercised in their use, but this is not the case. It can definitely still do harm to your health, and even more so to your children.

So, how do you make sure that you use pesticides in a safe, responsible way? You need to consider both the way you apply pesticides and how you store them.

You should always wear appropriate PPE when applying pesticides. Pesticides should not be applied on windy days since the chemicals can be carried away to someone that doesn’t wear protective equipment.

When you store pesticides, you should keep them in clearly marked containers so they are easy to identify. You should also make sure that your children can’t access them, preferably behind a locked cabinet door.

When does a bird become a pest? While some might enjoy feeding birds and listening to them chirp, there is a major downside to having a lot of birds in your yard. Bird droppings contain uric acid, so if a large amount of droppings were to be sitting on your sidewalks, driveway or other places, it can damage the surface.

Birds also tend to build nests in inconvenient places, which might block airflow through vents, or even be a fire hazard in your chimney.

On top of this, some birds also carry diseases that are harmful to humans.

So, if you want to keep birds away, what can you do? The first step is to remove easily accessible food. They might go after seeds that you sow, so this can be tricky. If you put down grass seed, you might want to cover them with straw as a protection. If you want some more resilient protection, you could cover the grass seed with a burlap sheet.

Do you have elderly parents that live in your home with you? Or maybe you have parents that live on their own, but need your help with much of the work around the home. This is the reality for many families, and we are happy to give back to those that took care of us growing up. Sometimes, though, declining health, agility, eyesight and hearing can mean that additional steps need to be taken to keep older ones safe in their home.

Two very common dangers to elderly ones are slips and falls. They might not have as keen a sense of balance as they used to, and their poor eyesight could make it difficult to spot trip hazards. To limit this danger, you should make sure that any carpet in your home is firmly attached so it doesn’t cause them to trip. You should also avoid running extension cords over areas where an older one will walk.

The tub can be very dangerous, as well, since it can get slippery when used. Installing an anti-slip surface in the tub is important, as well as, sturdy handholds along the walls.

PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. What it means is that PPE is made for protecting you from harm when doing various jobs. Some power equipment and some chemicals will provide you with information on what PPE is appropriate for the job, but you should be able to figure out what would be wise to wear in certain situations. If there will be a lot of noise, hearing protection is needed. If you’re dealing with chemicals or sprays, a mask and goggles would be safe. If you will be working with sharp objects, gloves are great to have on hand.

Unfortunately, even those that use PPE can get hurt, and it is usually because of taking off the PPE for some reason. Maybe you feel like you need to get a better grip, or maybe those goggles make it difficult to see clearly. While this might be the case, it is not worth getting injured over. Instead, take your time and do the work the right, safe way.

Selling an older home can be complicated at best, and usually you will not be able to sell it for as much as you would like. If you are in this situation, you might be considering a remodel of your home to increase its value, but is this really the best way to go?

The plethora of home remodeling shows that are on TV can really make you think that it is the easiest and most exciting thing you could do, but reality and television differ greatly. In fact, as a general rule, you will lose 20%-50% of your investment into a remodel when you look at the difference in sale price. You are much better off leaving the remodeling to a buyer instead. What you can do instead is repairs. Making sure that your home is in the best shape will have a much better return on your investment. If you feel like your home needs freshening up, painting it is a cheap way to make it look better without being too demanding.
